Worship Team Information
What is the structure of MCC Worship Team?
Stan Peterson(senior pastor) sets the vision and structure
for the worship service itself. He is responsible to communicate his
purposes for each service to the Worship Leader of that particular week.
The Worship Leadership Team is currently responsible for being the liaison
between the church leadership and the worship team. They reports directly
to the staff and elders. They also is responsible for running rehearsals,
scheduling, and coordinating auditions.
The Worship leadership team meets monthly.
Currently, all participants in the Worship Team report directly to
the Worship Leadership Team.
Vocalists and tech team members report to the Worship Team.
How good do I have to be to audition?
There are no requirements for skill level to audition. The audition process
is the first opportunity for us to find out about you and your musical
and spiritual background. Some musicians will have progressed far enough
on their “instrument” to be invited onto a worship team the
first time they audition. Other musicians may use the audition as a milestone
to discover where they need to grow to participate on a worship team at
MCC.
What is the time commitment?
Our vocal teams are currently on a two times per month rotation. All team
members are only required to attend those rehearsals scheduled for the
services they are singing in.
Musicians alternate on a different schedule depending on their availability
and openings in the schedule.
The Worship Teams work on a six month system. At the beginning
of each season, each member will be given a rotation schedule that lists
the team and members that they will be participating with for the following
six months. After each commitment period you may be invited to recommit for
the following season. The six month periods are:
February
1 – August 31 and September 1 –January 31.
Do I have to read music?
While it is certainly to your advantage to read music, for most vocalists
and band members it is not required. And, it can be to your disadvantage
to only be able to read music. For example, many guitarists can
only read chord charts, while many pianists cannot. While we strive to
provide the music in multiple formats, we cannot always do so. What is important
is that, however you learn the music, you learn it with the form, style,
and interpretation set by the vision of the pastor for our worship services.
What are rehearsals like?
We believe that primary purpose of our rehearsal times are to gel the different
voices and instruments together and work on group dynamics. Time is also
spent in communication and prayer as we seek the Lord for each week.
Vocals -
Will I have to/get to sing a solo?
No. This is not a solo audition. You are auditioning to sing on a team. The
skills necessary to sing on a team are different than those necessary to
sing solo. Our solo auditions are held separately.
I’m a bass, can I still sing?
Unfortunately, most contemporary and modern worship has been written and
arranged without a bass part. Therefore, we don’t generally have
basses sing on the worship team, although they are welcome to work on some
baritone parts and sing for special numbers as necessary.
Band -
What if I play an instrument not normally seen on stage
during services?
If you play a non-traditional instrument (one not normally seen on MCC’s
stage) we will put you on an “on call” list to pull from as we
have a need. Some examples of “non-traditional” instruments would
be: marching band instruments, violin, mandolin, harmonica….
When are auditions held?
Open auditions are held every six months, and are advertised several weeks
in advance. As needed, we may individually audition certain voices and/or
instruments at other times.
Sound and Tech teams -
I’m willing to learn but am not familiar
with your programs/equipment….
Discuss your interest with either Tom Peyree or the Worship Team. We
are willing to offer training and/or a “dip your foot in” time
where you can work with the team for one or two months and see if this is
an area where God is calling you.
Any other questions?? Please
call the Worship Team at (503) 838-1145.
Bless you for your interest!
